Set up in 2001, the .NAME gTLD is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level names remained active.
